Lie Shi

Lie Shi is the CEO of AM Batteries. Prior, Shi served as President of Celgard, a world-renowned battery separator company that invented and commercialized a solvent-free process to produce microporous membranes for lithium-ion batteries. Over his twenty-six-year stint at the company, he worked his way from technical manager, leading its lithium battery material development, to Vice President of R&D, to Chief Technology Officer, to Chief Operations Officer, and ultimately, ascending to President. He also served as the Global Head of Separator Business Development for Asahi Kasei Corporation, Celgard’s parent company. Shi received his B.S. in Physics from Kyoto University, Japan, M.S. in Physics from the University of Michigan, and an MBA from the University of North Carolina – Charlotte.

Dr. Yan Wang is the co-founder and President of AM Batteries and is the co-inventor of dry electrode technology. Wang is also the co-founder and chief scientist of Ascend Elements, Inc., the leading company in Li-ion battery recycling. As William Smith Foundation Dean’s Professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Wang has been investigating dry electrode manufacturing since 2013. Wang is a well-known expert in the battery field. Wang received his Ph.D. in Materials Science at the University of Windsor, Canada.

Hieu Duong
Chief Manufacturing Officer
Hieu Duong is the Chief Manufacturing Officer at AM Batteries. Duong is an interdisciplinary engineer with over 20 years of experience in technology development and industrialization. With a Ph.D. in Chemistry from UCLA, he advanced membrane technologies at GE and led battery innovations at Quallion and Zpower, where he led the development of composite separators to enable robust cycling of silver-zinc rechargeable batteries. At Maxwell Technologies, he developed the Dry Battery Electrode (DBE) process, a move that caught Tesla's attention, leading to an acquisition in 2019. As Tesla's Director of Electrode Engineering, Duong championed the DBE's commercialization. Now, at AM Batteries, he's leading the development and commercialization of low-cost lithium-ion battery manufacturing techniques.

Pan is also an Associate Professor at Texas A&M University. Pan is an expert in additive manufacturing and laser processing. He has been investigating solvent-free manufacturing of Li-ion batteries since he joined the Missouri University of Science and Technology as an assistant professor in 2013. He earned his MS in Manufacturing Engineering from Missouri S&T, then received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

Shi received his Ph.D. in Electrochemistry at the University of St. Andrews.

Armed with a master's degree in mechanical engineering and an MBA, Charles bridges the gap between engineering, science, and business commercialization.

Areas of focus include financial reporting, business forecasting, manufacturing, cost accounting and government contract compliance. Mark earned his bachelors degree in Accounting from Bentley University and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Dr. Brandon Ludwig is the Director of Research and Development at AM Batteries and a co-inventor of dry powder-based additive manufacturing of batteries. During his Ph.D. studies, he worked with Dr. Heng Pan to understand the impact of powder mixing, deposition, and calendaring characteristics on the dry electrode manufacturing process. Following his Ph.D. studies, Dr. Ludwig moved to Boeing as the integration and certification engineer for the MQ-25 Li-ion battery program. Dr. Ludwig received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Missouri University of Science & Technology.
